Hijenkery of thoughts
AIM: To showcase the hidden craft that is black granite carving that I witnessed in the craft cluster in 2018(Jun 2018-Dec 2018) and thus to design hence create real life products that are commercially viable. It aims to educate the people in the cluster too.
PROBLEM
-
Although the cluster was under Govt of India (small and medium industries scheme) it was involved in idol making for temples
-
The final products often include Indian traditional motifs and designs which makes them impermeable to the international markets.
-
Black granite being the non renewable resource, scarps of waste stones are lying thus indicating no waste management.
INSIGHTS
-
I executed the idea of utilizing the scarp and left over black granite into commercially viable products.
-
I end up making a collection of organizers and table fountains for themed restaurants and spas.
INSPIRATION
DADAISM
The art movement that accelerated in the early 20th century of the European Avant-garde with center cities being Zürich and Switzerland later Paris. It started in Zürich during the First World War in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war. It was an irrational movement to question the societal norms of the world. DESIGN ELEMENTS THAT I REFER TO:
-
Edgy look
-
Distorted figures
-
Lopsided
-
Outrageous
-
Dark presence in a frolic manner
CORRELATION OF THE COLLECTION WITH INSPIRATION:
Dadaism is the art of defying the norm and present it in a fun way likewise I took its essence and design elements to maintain that story within my collection by choosing the left over stones to create commercially acceptable products which was although an experiment but it is the need of the hour and proved to be the basic idea of sustainability.

FURTHER IMPLICATION IN THE AREA OF MARKETING THE SAME
I would take this opportunity to drag attention of the customers about how a piece of beauty can be made even from the scarps of stones. The earthed stones also causes several respiratory issues which is often ignored by brands. I would like to imbibe the sense of responsibility towards artisans and conscious usage of raw materials as a whole. It would start with proper Branding of item including packaging, and delivery.
The idea will start with a "conscious purchase". As and when a purchase is made the safety tool kits and other bare necessities are provided to the artisan and their families. The art of sustainability does not lie in pushing a product but to make the customer aware of the purchase that they are going to invest into. It can be done by Behind the scenes videos in various social media platforms, sustainable transparency as stated above. The concept of spas and restaurants can also be migrated to home and garden decorations by making the customers aware of the same through blogposts ,videos etc.
